Gynecological exams and PAP tests are an important part of any woman's health care. Having a thorough examination can identify health concerns and provide information for early detection of various diseases.

Naturopathic doctors are trained and licensed to perform regular Pap smears as well as pelvic and breast exams. As naturopathic doctors, we believe you should feel comfortable with these exams. These exams are offered in a professional and caring environment in which you will feel respected and safe.

What can you expect?

There are three parts to the gynecological exam:

1. External examination, including a visual and physical assessment. This allows the doctor to assess the health of the external genitalia.

2. Speculum examination to perform a Pap smear and swab for cultures. At this time, the vaginal walls and cervix can be visualized to ensure these structures appear healthy.

3. Bimanual examination, which is performed to assess the health of the uterus and ovaries through palpation of these structures.

 

During all three parts of the examination you will be informed of the findings. At the end of the assessment a treatment plan will be discussed for any pertinent health concerns.

A clinical breast exam may also be performed if you have any concerns regarding the health of your breasts.
